How to Choose Book Block Endpaper Pasting and Back Gluing Machines

From a raw book block to a finished book block, there are still some processes needed, such as end sheet lining, book block back gluing, and spine paper pasting, etc.

When you want to produce hardcover books or hardcover notebooks, you need to make the book block. From a raw book block to a finished book block, there are still some processes needed, such as end sheet lining, book block back gluing, and spine paper pasting, etc.

End Paper

End paper, also called end sheet, is used to connect with the hardcover case and book blocks when casing in and to protect the book block. Generally, when lining the end sheet on the book block, we often use the cold glue and just glue it on the two sides of the book block spine. Then the front and back end paper is pasted on the spine.

It's worth mentioning that some bibles and dictionaries, due to the very thin paper which makes it hard to thread sew the thick book block, often paste the endpapers on the first and last signatures at first, and then make the book block sewing. That's why we need the end paper pasting machine for signatures only.

For some ordinary book blocks that need endpaper pasting, we can choose the machine suitable for thick book blocks.

Gluing

Immerse the book block spine in glue in order to enhance the strength of the back of the sewn book block. The folded signatures can be pasted together for reinforcement. Good quality gluing will ensure that the glue doesn't leak inside the book block.

For ordinary hardcover notebooks, we often use cold gluing; for high-quality and long-lasting hardcover books, such as bibles and dictionaries, we often choose hot-melt glue to glue on the back of the book block. So when you choose a book block back gluing machine, whether to use cold gluing or hot-melt gluing way will be one of the important considerations.

Spine Paper

After gluing, the book block will be tapped by spine paper to reinforce the book block's spine. The gluing cylinder applies cold glue directly onto the spine paper and then taps it on the spine of the book blocks.

The spine paper is continuously applied to the book blocks. The book blocks are slightly spaced from each other and are united by the spine paper roller until they reach the separation station where the rotating blade cuts the spine paper.

So if you decide to use machines to replace the manual effort of some of the book block production processes, it is important to understand the function of the machines as well as the book block production process required.

Preparation Line

Actually, for the fully automatic and professional production of book blocks, we need to use the book block preparation line.

Take the HX6000 High-Speed Book Block Preparation Line for example.

The sewn book block will undergo three times of pre-press, dual end sheets lining, immersive cold gluing, IR and hot air drying, hot-melt gluing (optional), spine paper pasting and back stripping, dividing and dual channel IR and hot air drying, dual channel end pressing. The speed can be up to 70 cycles/min, which matches the speed of the hardcover book casing in line and can be connected with a complete hardcover book production line.

For the digital book binding requirements, with the automatic setting and job changeover function, the HX3000 Book Block Spine Gluing Line will be a good choice for the middle and short run book bind workshop.
